Keki Milk Bar
The fluffiest cakes in the cutest little place. That's the whole thing, and once you've had them you'll understand why people cross the city for something that takes twenty minutes to appear.
The soufflé pancakes come out taller than seems structurally reasonable, wobbling slightly on the way to the table, and they sink a little as you cut in and the air goes out of them.
The texture is what people come back for. Light to the point of barely being there, airy instead of spongy, dissolving before you've properly started chewing. People who've eaten these in Tokyo come here and say these ones are lighter.
They're faintly eggy and not very sweet, which is what lets you finish a plate and think seriously about a second. The sweetness lives in whatever's on top, so the pancake underneath stays what it is.
Cookies and cream, strawberry, pecan. Each one changes the taste without changing the feel, and the room splits fairly evenly over which is best.
Eat them the moment they land. Leave one sitting for five minutes and it settles into something denser, still good but no longer quite the thing you ordered. Get the matcha basque cheesecake if you want something at the other end of the scale — dense where the pancakes are air — and the two sit together in one sitting better than they have any right to. The strawberry latte is the drink people order twice, clear and creamy without being heavy, and it works against the pancakes instead of competing with them.
The front on La Trobe Street gives away nothing at all. Then you're inside and it's timber-clad and warm and softly lit with jazz on low, mostly stools, quiet enough that people talk softly, and the street stops mattering entirely. It's small in the way that makes a place feel looked after rather than cramped, and it's one of very few dessert places in Melbourne that people build an evening around instead of tacking onto one.
Hidden Street is for unlisted properties — homes that are not on the market, where the owner would still take the right conversation. Knowing a suburb comes first, which is why we are doing all of this.
More places we like are here. And you can find a little snapshot of Melbourne CBD on its own little page.
